The Clinical Studies on Sheehan Syndrome

Abstract
A Clinical study on 38 cases of Sheehan syndrome was made. The results were as follows;
1. The age incidence 52.6% of the cases studied were in the 4th decade, 23.7% were seen in both the 3rd and 5th decades.
2. Almost all the patients showed the clinical manifestations of the gonadal, thyroidal and adrenocortical failure.
3. The anemia was seen in 33 of 38 cases, and the eosinophilia in 15 of 28 cases.
4. The hypoglycemia was seen in 25 cases, and hyponatremia in 4 of 33 cases.
5. On the vaginal cytologic smear, 21 of 23 cases showed estratrophy, and the maturation value was 41.1¡¾6.0 (Mean¡¾SE).
6. The PBI value was subnormal in 18 of 21 cases studied and the 131 I-uptake was low in 10 of 18cases. The T4 value was low in 6 of 8 cases and T3 in 3 of 5 cases.
7. Urinary excretion of 17-ketosteroid and 17 ketogenic steroids were decreased in 14 and 16 of 27 cases in 24 hrs urine respectively.
8. Excretion of 17-ketosteroids and 17-ketogenic steroids in 24 hours urine increased with stepwise pattern following daily administration of ACTH. Whereas, eosinophil count dropped with stepwise pattern after each day of ACTH stimulation.
9. Adrenal crisis developed in 8 cases, and one died of hypoglycemia.
